Rwanda’s main routes between Kigali, Musanze, Huye and Rusizi are paved and manageable in a standard sedan. But the access roads into Volcanoes National Park, parts of Akagera, and the trails around Nyungwe involve unpaved sections, steep gradients and red laterite tracks that turn slick after rain. A 4×4 with proper ground clearance handles these without drama — and lets you take detours a sedan simply can’t manage.

Best national parks to visit by 4×4
- Volcanoes National Park (~110 km from Kigali) — gorilla trekking, golden monkeys, Mount Bisoke hike. 4×4 strongly recommended for access roads.
- Akagera National Park (~280 km from Kigali) — zebra, giraffe, hippo, lakeside camping. Dirt tracks inside the park require 4×4.
- Nyungwe National Park (~140 km from Kigali) — East Africa’s largest montane rainforest, canopy walk, primates. 4×4 recommended in wet season.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an international driving permit?
An International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home country licence is recommended. Let us know your nationality when booking and we will advise on requirements.
Is fuel included in the rental price?
Fuel is not included. Vehicles are provided with a full tank and should be returned full. If returned with less, the difference is charged at local rates.
Can the 4×4 handle Volcanoes National Park roads in the rainy season?
Yes. Our Land Cruisers are equipped for the unpaved sections around Volcanoes NP even in wet conditions. We brief you on current road conditions before every departure.
Can I take the 4×4 across the border into Uganda?
Yes, with advance notice. We arrange the cross-border permit and COMESA insurance required to take a Rwandan-registered vehicle into Uganda. See our one-way car rental page for details.

The minimum rental period is 1 day. For rentals of 7 days or more, ask about our long-term discount rates.
