- Rainy seasons: March-May (long rains) and October-November (short rains). Park access tracks become muddy. A 4×4 is essential rather than optional. Fewer tourists, more availability, and occasional discounts. Birding is excellent.

January — Dry, excellent
Part of the short dry season. Excellent gorilla trekking and game drives. Roads are dry and clear. Book vehicles and permits well ahead — this is a popular holiday period for European and North American visitors. Recommended vehicle: Land Cruiser VX or Prado.
February — Dry, very good
Still dry. Vegetation is lower which improves game viewing in Akagera. Good temperatures throughout Rwanda (cool in the highlands, warm in Akagera). One of the best months for photography. Recommended vehicle: RAV4 or Land Cruiser VX.
March — Rainy season starts
Long rainy season begins. Tracks around Volcanoes NP and inside Nyungwe start to get muddy. Park access is still possible but requires a 4×4 from this point. Gorilla trekking continues year-round regardless of rain. Good availability, lower prices. Recommended vehicle: Land Cruiser VX minimum.
April-May — Wettest months
The heaviest rain months. Some Nyungwe tracks may be temporarily closed after very heavy rain. Akagera roads are mostly fine (savannah drains better than rainforest). Excellent birding — migratory species arrive. Lowest prices and best vehicle availability of the year. Recommended vehicle: Land Cruiser VX or Prado for park visits.
June — Peak season begins
The long dry season starts. July and August are the absolute peak months — book vehicles and gorilla permits as early as possible, ideally 3-4 months ahead. Roads are excellent. Game viewing improves significantly in Akagera. Recommended vehicle: any 4×4, book early.
July-August — Peak season, book far ahead
The most popular months for gorilla trekking in Rwanda. Dry, clear roads, the best wildlife conditions of the year. Gorilla permits are sold out months in advance. Our fleet is often fully booked by May for July-August travel. Recommended vehicle: Land Cruiser VX or Prado — book immediately.
September — Still excellent, easing off
Dry season continues. Slightly lower demand than July-August. Still good conditions for all parks. Good month to visit if you couldn’t book in peak season. Recommended vehicle: RAV4 or Land Cruiser VX.
October-November — Short rains
Short rainy season. Showers are usually in the afternoon — mornings are clear and trekking starts at 7am so you’re often done before rain arrives. Park tracks get muddy but remain passable with a 4×4. Good value, fewer tourists. Excellent birding. Recommended vehicle: Land Cruiser VX.
December — Short dry season, busy
December is the holiday season. Second peak period after July-August. Gorilla permits and vehicles book up quickly. Roads dry out progressively through December. Recommended vehicle: any 4×4, book 6-8 weeks ahead for December.
