Self-Drive Safari Rwanda

Set your own pace through Rwanda's national parks with a well-maintained 4×4, full insurance, and unlimited mileage.

Rwanda is built for self-drive travel

Rwanda’s compact size and well-maintained main roads make it one of the most approachable countries in East Africa for a self-drive safari. Distances between Kigali and the major parks are short — Volcanoes National Park is around 110 km from the capital, Akagera around 280 km, and Nyungwe around 140 km — so a self-drive itinerary can comfortably cover multiple parks in 5-10 days without long driving days.

A sample 7-day self-drive itinerary

  • Days 1-2: Kigali city, then drive north to Musanze for Volcanoes National Park (gorilla trekking or golden monkey tracking).
  • Days 3-4: Continue west to Lake Kivu for a rest day, then south toward Nyungwe National Park for primate tracking and the canopy walk.
  • Days 5-6: Drive east to Akagera National Park for game drives and lakeside camping.
  • Day 7: Return to Kigali for departure, or continue to Uganda with a one-way rental.

Recommended vehicles

A Toyota RAV4 or Land Cruiser VX covers most self-drive safari routes comfortably. For travelers planning to camp along the way, the Land Cruiser with rooftop tent turns the itinerary above into a full camping safari with all gear provided.

What’s included with every self-drive rental

  • Liability insurance and unlimited mileage
  • Free Kigali airport pickup and drop-off
  • 24/7 phone support throughout your trip
  • Route briefing and current road condition updates for each park

Frequently asked questions

[rack_faq]
Q: Is it safe to self-drive in Rwanda?
A: Yes — Rwanda has some of the best-maintained and safest roads in the region, with clear signage on main routes. Park access roads can be rougher, which is why we recommend a 4×4 for those sections.

Q: Do I need to book park entry and gorilla permits separately?
A: Yes, gorilla trekking permits are booked through the Rwanda Development Board separately from the vehicle rental. We’re happy to advise on timing so your permit dates align with your driving itinerary.

Q: How many days should I budget for a self-drive Rwanda trip?
A: 5 days covers Kigali, Volcanoes and Lake Kivu comfortably. 7-10 days allows time to add Nyungwe and Akagera without rushing.
