Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s only savannah park and one of the best self-drive wildlife destinations in East Africa. Unlike Kenya’s Maasai Mara or Tanzania’s Serengeti, where self-drive is common, Akagera sees relatively few independent visitors — which means you often have the park to yourself. Here’s everything you need for a successful self-drive trip to Akagera.
Getting to Akagera National Park from Kigali
Akagera National Park is 100 km east of Kigali on the RN3 highway — approximately 2.5 to 3 hours depending on traffic. The road is fully paved to the southern (Kayonza) gate. The northern gate near Nyagatare is accessible from Kigali in around 2.5-3 hours on the same highway, then north on a paved road. Fuel up in Kayonza before entering — no fuel available inside the park.

The best self-drive game drive routes in Akagera
Southern loop (half day — 3-4 hours)
The southern section around Lakes Shakani and Ihema is the easiest and most reliable for wildlife sightings. Enter at the southern Kayonza gate. Drive north along the lake shore, stopping at viewpoints over Lake Ihema. Hippo pools are visible from the road in multiple spots. This loop covers approximately 50 km.
Northern loop — lion territory (full day — 6-8 hours)
Lions, black rhino and elephant concentrate in the northern section around Mutumba Hill. Enter at the southern gate and drive the full length of the park to the northern section. This is a full day — start at 6am. The tracks are rougher in the north and a Land Cruiser VX is strongly recommended. Total: ~120 km.
Kagera River track (specialist, 4×4 essential)
The tracks running along the Kagera River on the eastern boundary of the park (the Tanzania border) are the most remote and roughest in Akagera. Excellent for solitude and chance wildlife encounters. Only attempt this with a capable 4×4 and full fuel. Let the gate rangers know your route before departing.
Lakeshore camping in Akagera
Camping at Akagera is one of the best experiences in Rwanda. Two public campsites sit directly on the shore of Lake Ihema — Camping Shakani and Camping Mutumba. Both are bookable through the Rwanda Development Board. Hippos regularly come ashore near the campsites at night — thrilling and completely normal. Do not leave your tent between dusk and dawn without a torch and awareness of where the hippos are.

Wildlife you can realistically expect to see
- Hippo — certain. Hundreds in Lake Ihema, visible from the lake road at any time of day.
- Crocodile — very likely. Large Nile crocodiles on lake shores and river banks.
- Zebra — common in the southern grasslands.
- Giraffe — resident in the southern section, frequently seen.
- Elephant — small population in the north. Not guaranteed but regularly sighted.
- Lion — present since 2015 reintroduction, population growing. Most often in the north. Ask rangers at the gate about recent sightings.
- Buffalo — large herds in the central grasslands.
- Black rhino — reintroduced 2017. Small population. Ask rangers for current location — you may need a ranger guide to find them.
- Leopard — present but rarely seen. Mainly nocturnal.
Night game drives and boat safaris: Akagera National Park
Both activities are excellent in Akagera and not offered by most Rwanda parks. Night drives run from approximately 6-9pm and give a real chance of leopard, serval, civets and other nocturnal species. Book at the gate on arrival. Boat safaris on Lake Ihema (2 hours, departing morning and afternoon) are one of the best hippo experiences in Africa.
