Car Rental Nyungwe National Park | Drive from Kigali

Nyungwe National Park covers the southwest corner of Rwanda, approximately 220 km from Kigali — a 3.5 to 4.5-hour drive on the RN1 highway heading south and then west, Car Rental Nyungwe National Park. The road is paved and well-maintained throughout. The park runs along a central ridge at altitudes between 1,600 m and 2,950 m, which means the approach road climbs significantly in the final hour. A 4×4 is recommended, especially in the wet season when the mountain road can be misty and the park trails muddy.

Wildlife and activities in Nyungwe

• Chimpanzee trekking — Nyungwe is home to approximately 500 chimpanzees in several habituated groups. Treks leave from the Uwinka Visitor Centre. Permits ($150 per person) must be booked through RDB in advance.
• Canopy walkway — one of only a handful in Africa, the Nyungwe canopy walkway stretches 160 m across the treetops at 50 m above the forest floor. An unforgettable perspective on the forest. No permit required beyond park entry.
• Colobus monkey treks — Nyungwe hosts the largest troops of Angola colobus monkeys in Africa — groups of up to 400 individuals. Permits $100 per person.
• Birding — Nyungwe is Rwanda’s premier birding destination with over 300 species recorded, including 29 Albertine Rift endemics. The montane forest habitat is found nowhere else in the region.
• Waterfall trail — an easy 10 km circular walk through the forest to the Isumo waterfall. No permit required beyond park entry.

Car Rental Nyungwe National Park – Recommended vehicles

• Land Cruiser VX — $70/day: Most popular for Nyungwe. The mountain road climbs steeply and a 4×4 with good ground clearance handles the wet-season mist and any muddier sections with confidence.
• Land Cruiser Prado — $90/day: The most comfortable option for the long 4-hour drive from Kigali. Particularly good if combining Nyungwe with Lake Kivu (an additional 1 hour west).
• Toyota RAV4 — $40/day: Suitable in dry season on the main road. Not recommended for wet season or for anyone wanting to explore secondary tracks.

Sample Nyungwe self-drive itinerary

1. Day 1 — Kigali to Nyungwe (~220 km, 4 hrs): Collect vehicle at Kigali airport. Drive south on RN1, climbing into the tea plantations and then the forest. Check in to accommodation near Uwinka or Gisakura. Afternoon canopy walkway walk.
2. Day 2 — Chimpanzee trekking: Early 5am start. Trek duration 2-6 hours. Return to accommodation for lunch. Afternoon waterfall trail or birding in the forest.
3. Day 3 — Colobus monkeys or travel day: Morning colobus monkey trek or birding walk. Drive west to Lake Kivu (1 hr) for a lake rest day, or return east to Kigali (4 hrs) for departure.

Nyungwe and Lake Kivu — a natural combination

Nyungwe sits just one hour east of Lake Kivu, Rwanda’s great rift valley lake on the DRC border. Combining a night or two in the forest with a lake rest day on Kivu is the classic southwestern Rwanda itinerary — active in the forest, relaxed on the water. What to know before you drive

• Nyungwe sits above 1,600 m. Temperatures are cool — bring a fleece and waterproof jacket even in dry season. Mornings in the forest can be cold and misty.
• The road from Butare (Huye) to Nyungwe is winding mountain road with steep drops. Drive slowly and with your headlights on.
• Fuel is available in Butare (Huye) and Rusizi. Fill up before entering the park area — no fuel stations inside Nyungwe.
• Chimpanzee and colobus monkey permits are frequently sold out in peak season. Book through RDB before finalising your travel dates.
• Cell phone reception is patchy in the forest. Download offline maps before leaving Kigali.
