Getting to Volcanoes National Park by car
Volcanoes National Park is located in northwest Rwanda, approximately 110 km from Kigali — about a 2-hour drive on the well-maintained RN2 highway. The route passes through Musanze (formerly Ruhengeri), the nearest town to the park, where most travelers stay the night before their gorilla trek. A standard car handles the highway comfortably; a 4×4 is recommended for the last stretch into the park and for any off-road sections around the Virunga foothills.

The RN2 highway from Kigali to Musanze is fully paved and in good condition. The access roads from Musanze into the park and between the trailheads are where a 4×4 earns its value — especially after rain, when red laterite tracks become slippery.

- Land Cruiser VX — $70/day: The most popular choice for Volcanoes NP. Higher clearance than the RAV4, comfortable for the full 2-hour drive from Kigali, and handles all park tracks in any season.

- Day 1 — Kigali to Musanze (~110 km, 2 hrs): Collect vehicle at Kigali airport. Drive northwest on RN2 through the rolling hills. Check in to accommodation in Musanze. Afternoon visit to the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo.
- Day 2 — Gorilla trekking day: Early 5am start. Report to park headquarters at 7am for briefing. Trek duration 2-8 hours depending on gorilla family location. Return to Musanze for overnight.

What to know before you drive
- Gorilla permits sell out months in advance during peak season (June-September, December-February). Book your permit before booking your car rental.
- There is a fuel station in Musanze — fill up there before heading to the park. No fuel available inside Volcanoes NP.
- The drive from Kigali to Musanze is beautiful but involves many curves through the highlands. Allow 2-2.5 hours rather than rushing.
- Accommodation in Musanze ranges from budget guesthouses to luxury lodges. Book early during gorilla trekking season.
- Park entrance fees are separate from your gorilla or golden monkey permit. Confirm current fees with RDB.
