Getting to Akagera National Park by car

Akagera National Park lies in eastern Rwanda along the Tanzanian border, roughly 100 km from Kigali by road — about a 2.5 to 3-hour drive on the RN3 highway heading east. The road is paved all the way to the park’s southern gate at Kayonza. A standard 4×4 such as a Land Cruiser or RAV4 is ideal for game drives inside the park, where the tracks are unpaved dirt and gravel.

Wildlife and activities in Akagera

• Big Five game drives — Akagera was restocked with lions in 2015 and black rhino in 2017, completing Rwanda’s Big Five alongside elephant, leopard and buffalo. Self-drive game drives are permitted on the main park tracks.
• Boat safaris on Lake Ihema — the park’s network of lakes and wetlands along the Tanzania border hosts large populations of hippo, crocodile and waterbirds. Boat trips can be booked at the park gate.
• Lakeshore camping — Akagera has two public campsites along Lake Ihema. Camping here with a rooftop tent setup is one of the best safari experiences in Rwanda — hippos calling through the night, birdsong at dawn.
• Night game drives — guided night drives are available through the park (booked at the gate) and give a good chance of seeing leopard, serval, and other nocturnal species.
• Birding — over 500 species recorded including shoebill stork, papyrus gonolek, and numerous raptors. Akagera is one of the best birdwatching sites in East Africa.

Recommended vehicles for Akagera National Park

• Toyota RAV4 — $40/day: Handles Akagera’s main game drive tracks in dry season. Lighter fuel consumption than a Land Cruiser for the 100 km highway drive from Kigali.
• Land Cruiser VX — $70/day: Recommended for wet season visits and for reaching the more remote northern sections of the park where tracks are rougher.
• Land Cruiser Rooftop Tent — $120/day: The ultimate Akagera setup — drive in, camp at Lake Ihema, self-drive game drives at dawn and dusk. All camping gear included.

Self-drive game drive tips for Akagera

• Pick up a park map at the gate — tracks are numbered and the map shows water sources and wildlife concentration zones.
• Best game viewing hours are 6-9am and 4-6pm. Drive slowly and stop the engine when you spot animals.
• Stay on designated tracks — off-road driving is not permitted.
• Speed limit inside the park is 40 km/h on tracks. Drive slower on game drives.
• Fuel up in Kayonza before entering the park — no fuel inside Akagera.
• Park gate opens at 6am. Book your accommodation or camping spot in advance through RDB.

Sample Akagera self-drive itinerary

1. Day 1 — Kigali to Akagera (~100 km, 2.5-3 hrs): Collect vehicle at Kigali airport. Drive east on RN3. Enter through the southern Kayonza gate. Afternoon game drive to Lake Ihema for the hippo and croc boat trip.
2. Day 2 — Full day game drive: Dawn start at 6am from camp. Full northern loop — lion territory and elephant areas. Sundowner at the lake. Second night at the campsite.
3. Day 3 — Morning drive + return to Kigali: Early morning birding walk or final game drive. Exit via northern Nyagatare gate or southern Kayonza gate. Drive back to Kigali (3 hrs) in time for afternoon flight, or continue north to the Uganda border.

Combining Akagera with other destinations

• + Kigali (same day): Many travelers do Akagera as a 1-2 night excursion from Kigali. The 100 km distance makes it the most accessible park from the capital.
• + Uganda border (north gate): The northern Nyagatare gate leads toward the Kagitumba border crossing. With a one-way rental, you can exit Akagera and continue to Kampala without backtracking.
• + Nyungwe National Park: A full Rwanda east-west circuit — Kigali, Akagera east, Kigali, Nyungwe southwest. Best done over 5-7 days.
