Renting a car in Kigali
Kigali is Rwanda’s capital and the most practical starting point for any self-drive trip around the country. Our office is in the city centre on KN 5 Rd, and we offer free vehicle pickup and drop-off at Kigali International Airport (KGL), 15 km east of town. Whether you need a car for city errands, a business trip, or as the first leg of a national park safari, we have vehicles ready from $30/day.
What to do in Kigali
- Kigali Genocide Memorial — Rwanda’s most important historical site. The memorial documents the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi and is a sobering, well-presented museum. Located in Gisozi, north Kigali. Allow 2-3 hours.
- Inema Arts Centre — a vibrant gallery and creative hub in Kiyovu showcasing contemporary Rwandan artists. Free to enter. Open daily.
- Kimironko Market — the largest open-air market in Kigali. Great for local produce, secondhand clothing, crafts and textiles. Best visited on Saturday mornings.
- Nyamirambo neighbourhood — the city’s most characterful and historically Swahili quarter. Street food, mosques, local cafes and a very different atmosphere from the city centre.
- Kigali Heights and the CBD — Kigali’s modern commercial centre with good restaurants, coffee shops, supermarkets and banks. KN 2 Rd and KG 7 Ave are the main strips.
- Mount Kigali — a short drive or moto-taxi ride from the centre, the hill offers a panoramic view over the city’s valleys and ridges.
Driving in Kigali — what you need to know
- Drive on the right-hand side of the road.
- Speed limit in Kigali is 50 km/h in residential streets, 60 km/h on main roads. Enforcement is strict — speed cameras and police checkpoints are common.
- Motorcycles (motos) are everywhere and move unpredictably. Give them space and check your mirrors before turning.
- Kigali is famously clean — no plastic bags are permitted in Rwanda. Do not bring plastic bags from the airport.
- Parking is generally available near main attractions. Central areas have paid parking bays marked in yellow.
- Kigali’s hills mean the road layout is not grid-based. Download Google Maps offline before leaving the airport.
Kigali as a base for day trips
- Volcanoes National Park (~110 km, 2 hrs): A pre-dawn departure from Kigali is standard for gorilla trekkers. Many travelers drive up the evening before and stay in Musanze.
- Akagera National Park (~100 km, 2.5 hrs): Feasible as a 1-night trip from Kigali. Drive out early, spend the night camping or in a lodge, and return the following afternoon.
- Lake Kivu (~160 km west, 2.5 hrs): A popular weekend escape from Kigali for both residents and visitors. Sandy beaches, boat trips and cold Primus beer on the lakeside.
- Nyungwe National Park (~220 km south, 4 hrs): Too far for a day trip — budget at least 2 nights in the forest.
Recommended vehicles for Kigali and city trips
- Toyota Corolla — $30/day: Perfect for Kigali city driving, business meetings and paved-road travel to nearby towns. Most fuel-efficient option.
- Toyota RAV4 — $40/day: Good balance between city comfort and the ability to handle Rwanda’s hilly terrain. If your trip includes any national park driving, upgrade to this or higher.
- Land Cruiser VX — $70/day: If you’re starting in Kigali and then heading to national parks, pick up a Land Cruiser from the start rather than switching vehicles.
Getting from Kigali airport to the city
Kigali International Airport (KGL) is 15 km east of the city centre — about 20-40 minutes by car depending on traffic. We include a free airport pickup with every multi-day rental. Is it easy to drive in Kigali?
Yes. Kigali is one of the easiest African capitals to drive in — the roads are well-maintained, signage is clear, and the city is clean and orderly. The main challenge for new arrivals is the hilly layout, which means roads curve and climb rather than forming a grid. We recommend downloading Google Maps offline before arriving.
Where can I pick up my rental car in Kigali?
We offer free pickup at Kigali International Airport (KGL). We can also deliver vehicles to your hotel in Kigali city centre. Contact us with your accommodation address when booking. Our office is on KN 5 Rd, Prince House Building, 2nd Floor, Office #5.
Can I use a rental car to explore Kigali and then drive to the national parks?
Yes — this is exactly how most of our customers use their rental. Collect the vehicle at the airport, explore Kigali for a day, then drive to Volcanoes, Akagera or Nyungwe. If you plan to visit national parks, book a 4×4 rather than a sedan from the start.
Is parking safe in Kigali?
Yes. Kigali is one of the safest cities in Africa for vehicle security. Paid parking bays in the CBD are attended. Hotel parking is generally secure. We have not had significant vehicle security incidents with our rental fleet in Kigali.
Do I need a local SIM card for navigation in Kigali?
A local SIM card (MTN or Airtel, available at the airport arrivals hall) gives you mobile data for Google Maps, which is helpful for navigating Kigali’s hills. Alternatively, download the offline Rwanda map on Google Maps before you arrive.
