Gorilla trekking in Rwanda car rental, requires more planning than most experiences in East Africa — permits sell out months ahead, the drive from Kigali involves mountain roads, and the morning start time means most travelers stay the night before in Musanze. This guide covers everything you need to know about renting a car for gorilla trekking in Rwanda.
Step 1 — Book your gorilla permit first, then car rental Rwanda
Gorilla trekking permits cost $1,500 per person and are issued by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB). They sell out months in advance during peak season (June-September and December-February). The most important rule of planning a gorilla trek in Rwanda: book your permit before you book your car rental. Your car rental dates should fit around your confirmed permit date — not the other way around.
Book permits directly at rdb.rw. Payment is online by card. You’ll receive a confirmation email with your permit date and assigned gorilla family.
Step 2 — Choose the right vehicle: gorilla trekking car rental Rwanda
The RN2 highway from Kigali to Musanze is fully paved and well-maintained. The roads inside and around Volcanoes National Park are unpaved red laterite that becomes slippery in the wet season. Our recommendation by season:
- Dry season (June-Sept, Dec-Feb): A Toyota RAV4 ($40/day) handles the highway and main park access roads. If you have extra luggage or are combining with other parks, step up to a Land Cruiser VX.
- Rainy season (March-May, Oct-Nov): A Land Cruiser VX ($70/day) or Prado ($90/day) is strongly recommended. The laterite tracks around Volcanoes NP become muddy and slippery — higher clearance and 4×4 traction matters.

Trekking briefings start at 7:00 AM at Volcanoes NP headquarters in Kinigi. Most trekkers drive the night before from Kigali and stay in Musanze. If you insist on driving the morning of the trek, you need to leave Kigali by 4:30 AM at the latest — not recommended.
Step 4 — Where to stay in Musanze
- Budget (under $50/night): La Palme Hotel, Muhabura Hotel
- Mid-range ($50-150/night): Gorilla’s Nest, Mountain Gorilla View Lodge
- Luxury ($150+/night): Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel, Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge
Book accommodation as early as you book your permit — Musanze fills up during gorilla trekking peak season.
Step 5 — What happens on trek day
- Report to park headquarters at Kinigi by 7:00 AM. Parking is available at the headquarters — safe and supervised.
- Attend the 45-minute briefing. You’re assigned a gorilla family based on fitness level and group size.
- Trek starts around 8:00 AM. Duration: 2 to 8 hours depending on where the gorilla family is that day.
- One hour with the gorilla family when found. This is the permit — one hour, no exceptions.
- Return to Musanze for lunch and recovery. Many travelers drive back to Kigali the same afternoon (2 hrs) or continue west to Lake Kivu.
After the trek — where to go next
- Lake Kivu (~60 km west of Musanze, 1 hr): The most popular post-trek relaxation destination. Beaches, boat trips and good restaurants in Rubavu.
- Back to Kigali (~110 km, 2 hrs): Drive back the same day in time for an afternoon flight.
- Continue to Uganda — Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (~90 km north, cross-border): Trek Rwanda gorillas, then cross the border for Uganda gorillas or chimpanzees in Bwindi. Requires a cross-border one-way rental arranged in advance.
