Seven days is enough to see Rwanda’s four major highlights — Kigali, Volcanoes National Park, Lake Kivu with Nyungwe, and Akagera — in a single loop without rushing. This itinerary is designed for a self-drive rental starting and ending at Kigali International Airport. Total driving: approximately 750 km.
Before you leave home — book these in advance
- Gorilla trekking permit — $1,500/person via rdb.rw. Non-negotiable: book before anything else. Peak season (June-Sept, Dec-Feb) permits sell out months ahead.
- Vehicle rental — Land Cruiser VX or Prado recommended for this full circuit. Request a quote once you have your permit date confirmed.
- Park entry fees — paid at each gate. Carry some USD cash as backup.
Day 1 — Arrive Kigali, city orientation
Driving: 0 km
Collect vehicle at KGL airport (free pickup included with rental). Check in to Kigali hotel. Afternoon: Kigali city — Kigali Genocide Memorial (allow 2-3 hours), Kimironko Market, Inema Arts Centre. Dinner in Kiyovu or Nyamirambo. Early night — Day 2 starts before dawn.
Day 2 — Kigali to Volcanoes National Park (gorilla trek)
Driving: 110 km, ~2 hours
Leave Kigali by 4:30 AM. Drive north on RN2 to Volcanoes NP headquarters in Kinigi. Arrive by 6:45 AM for the 7:00 AM briefing. Gorilla trek: 2-8 hours depending on gorilla family location. One hour with the gorillas. Return to Musanze for lunch. Overnight in Musanze.
Tip: book accommodation in Musanze the night before (Day 1 evening, drive up after the Kigali Genocide Memorial) if you want more sleep before the trek.
Day 3 — Musanze to Lake Kivu (Rubavu)
Driving: 60 km, ~1.5 hours
Morning: optional golden monkey tracking at Volcanoes NP ($100 permit, no pre-booking needed in low season). Drive west from Musanze to Rubavu on the shores of Lake Kivu. Afternoon on the lake — beach, boat trip to Gisenyi peninsula, cold Primus at a lakeside bar. Overnight Rubavu.
Day 4 — Lake Kivu to Nyungwe National Park
Driving: ~200 km, ~3 hours
Drive south along Lake Kivu to Karongi (Kibuye) for a short stop — one of the most beautiful lake views in Rwanda. Continue south to Nyungwe National Park. Afternoon arrival at Uwinka Visitor Centre. Check in to accommodation near Gisakura. Short canopy walkway walk if time permits (no permit needed, just park entry).
Day 5 — Nyungwe: Chimpanzee trekking and canopy walk
Driving: 0 km (in park only)
Early start for chimpanzee trekking briefing at 5:30 AM ($150/person permit, book through RDB). Trek: 2-6 hours. Afternoon: canopy walkway if not done Day 4. Evening: waterfall trail if energy allows. Overnight near Nyungwe.
Day 6 — Nyungwe to Akagera National Park
Driving: ~280 km, ~4 hours
The longest driving day. Leave Nyungwe after breakfast. Drive east across Rwanda through Butare (Huye) and Kigali (stop for lunch, 2 hours), then east to Akagera NP southern gate (Kayonza). Enter the park in the afternoon for a late-day game drive. Camp at Lake Ihema or stay at Akagera Game Lodge. Overnight Akagera.
Tip: If driving Nyungwe to Akagera in one day feels too long, spend night 6 in Kigali and do Akagera as a day 7 day trip before your flight.
Day 7 — Akagera game drives, return to Kigali
Driving: 100 km (Akagera to Kigali), ~3 hours
Dawn game drive at 6 AM — best time for lions and the golden light over the savannah. Boat safari on Lake Ihema if time allows (2 hours, $35/person). Exit Akagera by midday. Drive west on RN3 back to Kigali (~2.5 hours). Vehicle return at KGL airport. Evening flight home.
