Car rental insurance in Rwanda is straightforward once you understand what each type covers. This guide explains exactly what third-party liability insurance covers, when you need comprehensive cover, what the excess means, and what documentation you need if you have an accident.
Types of car rental insurance in Rwanda
Third-party liability (included with every rental)
Third-party liability insurance covers damage or injury caused to other people or their property in an accident that is your fault. It is a legal requirement in Rwanda and is included in every Rent a Car Kigali rental — not added as an extra at pickup. If you damage another vehicle or injure a pedestrian, third-party liability covers the other party’s costs.
What it does NOT cover: damage to your own rental vehicle, theft of the rental vehicle, personal medical costs, or personal belongings inside the vehicle.
Comprehensive cover (optional upgrade)
Comprehensive insurance covers damage to the rental vehicle itself — in an accident, a rollover, storm damage or theft. It comes with an excess (see below). Available as an upgrade on request when booking.
COMESA Yellow Card (cross-border trips)
For any trip into Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya or Burundi, the COMESA Yellow Card replaces standard third-party insurance and is valid in 14 African countries. We arrange this with every cross-border rental — at least 5 days advance notice required.
Understanding the excess (deductible)
The excess is the amount you pay first in any insurance claim — the insurance covers costs above that amount. For example, if damage to the vehicle costs $800 to repair and your excess is $500, you pay $500 and insurance covers $300.
Excess amounts vary by vehicle and are stated in the rental agreement before you sign. Always read this before signing.
What voids insurance coverage
- Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Driving on roads not permitted under the rental agreement (e.g. DRC without advance permission)
- Allowing an unauthorised driver to drive the vehicle
- Driving at excessive speed
- Deliberate damage
What to do if you have an accident in Rwanda
- Stop safely and don’t move the vehicle unless it’s blocking traffic causing danger
- Call Rwanda Police: 112
- Call our 24/7 support line — number is in your rental agreement
- Photograph vehicle positions, damage, tyre marks and the scene from multiple angles
- Exchange details with other drivers: name, phone, vehicle registration
- Do NOT admit fault, apologise or make any payments at the scene
- Obtain a police report reference number — required for any insurance claim
- Notify us in writing within 24 hours
Insurance for rental vehicles in Uganda and Tanzania
Rwanda third-party insurance is not valid in other countries. COMESA Yellow Card coverage is provided with all cross-border rentals. If you drive into Uganda without this documentation, you are uninsured. We arrange it in advance — do not attempt a border crossing without confirming your documentation first.
Is insurance included in Rwanda car rental rates?
At Rent a Car Kigali, third-party liability insurance is included in every quoted rate. We do not add it at pickup. Some operators do not include it — always confirm when comparing quotes.
Do I need travel insurance as well as rental insurance?
Yes. Car rental insurance covers the vehicle and third-party liability. Your personal travel insurance should cover your medical costs, personal belongings, flight cancellation and personal accident. These are separate and both recommended for Rwanda travel.
What happens to my deposit if I damage the vehicle?
If the damage cost is below the excess amount, it is deducted from the deposit. If the excess is higher than the deposit, you pay the difference. The deposit is returned in full if the vehicle is returned in the same condition as documented at pickup.
