Rwanda offers exceptional wildlife photography opportunities — mountain gorillas at close range, savannah game drives in Akagera, chimpanzees in Nyungwe, and one of the best bird lists in East Africa. Getting the most from a photography trip requires the right vehicle setup and an understanding of the best times, positions and access routes at each location.

Best vehicles for wildlife photography in Rwanda

  • Land Cruiser VX or Prado ($70-90/day) — the best photography vehicle. High roof for game drive visibility, wide doors for window mounting, powerful engine for steady movement on rough tracks. Sunroof on Prado models allows standing shots in Akagera. Land Cruiser rental →
  • Land Cruiser Extended ($180/day) — for photography groups of 4-6 sharing costs. Multiple window positions for simultaneous shots.

Rwanda photography locations — vehicle and timing guide

Akagera National Park — savannah and wetland

Best for: lion, elephant, giraffe, zebra, hippo, crocodile, birding. Self-drive game drives permitted on numbered tracks. Akagera guide →

  • Best light: 6-9am and 4-6:30pm. Dawn drives from camp (arriving overnight) give the best light and most active wildlife
  • Best position: south lake road for hippo and waterbird shots from the vehicle at water level
  • Northern section: lion territory — best approached slowly from the track junction near Mutumba Hill at dawn
  • Boat safari on Lake Ihema: excellent for low-angle hippo shots and aerial waterbird photography from the water level

Volcanoes National Park — mountain gorillas

Best for: mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, Albertine Rift birds. The trek is on foot — vehicle is parked at Kinigi headquarters.

  • All photography is done on foot during the trek
  • Gorilla hour is one hour — use it well. Shoot continuously in burst mode
  • Light inside bamboo forest is low — use ISO 1600-6400 and a fast lens (f/2.8 or wider)
  • The approach through cultivated fields to the forest edge has excellent landscape photography opportunities

Nyungwe National Park — primates and birds

Best for: chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, Albertine Rift endemic birds. All trekking on foot.

  • Canopy walkway: morning mist photography at altitude — arrive at first light
  • Chimpanzee trekking: forest light is very low — push ISO aggressively
  • Birding: the trail around the Uwinka Visitor Centre at dawn has exceptional species diversity

Essential photography gear for the Rwanda trip

  • Lens — 100-400mm or 200-500mm for Akagera game drives and gorilla portraits
  • Wide angle — 16-35mm for landscape photography between parks
  • Beanbag or window mount — essential for stable shots from the vehicle in Akagera
  • High ISO body — gorilla and chimp trekking involves very low forest light
  • Dust protection — Akagera’s dry season tracks are dusty; keep lenses and sensor protected
  • Power bank × 2 — charge batteries overnight as power is intermittent at some campsites

Photography add-ons with your vehicle rental

  • Driver-guide with wildlife knowledge — a good guide positions the vehicle for the best angle, knows where animals will be at each time of day, and can communicate with other guides via radio to locate lions. Add a driver-guide →
  • Rooftop tent setup — overnight camping at Akagera Lake Ihema lets you be on the water at first light, unavailable from any lodge
