The route — step by step

  1. Kigali → Musanze (110 km, 2 hrs): Take the RN2 north from Kigali. The road climbs through the highlands past Rulindo and Gakenke. Musanze is the last major town before the lake.
  2. Musanze (optional stop): Fuel, lunch, or a visit to Musanze Caves. If you have a gorilla trek the next day, stay here overnight.
  3. Musanze → Rubavu (60 km, 1 hr): Drive west from Musanze on a winding road that descends into the Rift Valley. The lake appears in the final 10 km — a sudden and dramatic reveal.
  4. Rubavu: Lake Kivu’s largest town. Most hotels are on the lake road (Boulevard de l’indépendance).

What to see along the Kigali-Rubavu route

  • Rulindo tea plantations — 50 km from Kigali, the road passes through Rwanda’s main tea growing region. Green terraced hillsides, very photogenic.
  • Musanze Caves — lava tubes from Virunga volcano activity. 45-minute guided tour, worth a stop.
  • Twin Lakes Burera and Ruhondo — 20 km east of Musanze, dramatic crater lakes with boat trips and excellent views from the ridge above.
  • Lake Kivu viewpoint — approximately 10 km before Rubavu, the first viewpoint over Lake Kivu appears on the left. Stop here for the arrival photograph.

Rubavu — what to do on Lake Kivu

  • Sunset boat trip to Napoleon Island (thousands of fruit bats at dusk)
  • Morning kayaking or paddleboarding from hotel beach
  • Congo Nile Trail walking or cycling (day sections available)
  • Visit the border market at Petite Barrière (Rwanda-DRC border, walk only)
  • Cold Primus or Mutzig beer on the lakeside at sunset
