Kigali to Musanze by rental car — what to expect
The RN2 highway from Kigali to Musanze is 110 km and well-maintained throughout. Expect a 1.5 to 2-hour drive depending on your starting point and traffic leaving Kigali. The final 30 km climbs steadily into the Virunga highlands — beautiful scenery but take the bends carefully, especially at night or in rain.
Should you drive up the night before?
Yes — strongly recommended. Gorilla trek briefings start at 7:00 AM at Volcanoes NP headquarters in Kinigi, 15 km beyond Musanze. That means leaving Kigali by 4:30 AM if driving the morning of the trek. Most travelers stay the night in Musanze instead — a much more relaxed start to a significant day.

Best rental vehicle for Musanze
In dry season (June-Sept, Dec-Feb): a Toyota RAV4 ($40/day) handles the highway and main tracks comfortably. In rainy season (March-May, Oct-Nov): a Land Cruiser VX ($70/day) is strongly recommended for the laterite tracks around the park.
